Course Description
COMM 210 is a core course in the JMSB program that focusses on core concepts in contemporary business thinking. The course aims to teach critical managerial theories. Professors expect students to be able to apply these theories to real world examples in the business world.
As such, COMM 210 is multidisciplinary in the sense that the concepts covered can be applied to different fields such as marketing, organizational behavior, and corporate strategy.
To that end, the content itself is based on different managerial theories and their application. This includes concepts like sigmoid curves, competitive advantage, and managerial roles. The works of important authors illustrate these concepts, including Mintzberg, Herzberg, Collins & Porras, Chandler, Greiner, Handy, Barney, Hill and more.
Evaluations apply these different theories to real world examples. COMM 210 essay (exam) assignments, for example, give students an article to read, and then ask for two concepts to be applied. The student is able to add additional outside research about the company in question if needed.
The COMM 210 group project and assignment similarly revolve around the application of these different theories to a given example, with students having a bit more freedom with regard to choosing which theories to cover.
Success therefore depends on not only understanding these concepts, but also how they can be applied to different managerial situations, as well as conducting sufficient research about companies and using this research to demonstrate the application of these theories.
